What Jesus revels for us is that the absurdity of the question wasn’t in the made-up scenario that they posed to him. The absurdity was that the Sadducees were stuck in their inability to imagine God’s future. They were living in a black and white world; they were standing in an ice cream shop, where God, the master ice cream maker, was hard at work crafting a plethora of flavors, and all they could think about was chocolate and vanilla. The absurdity of the question was not the scenario itself but the fact that the Sadducees couldn’t imagine that the God of creation; the God who caused Abraham and Sarah to conceive a promised child in their old age; the God who held Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in his heart...that this God would be capable of imagining and creating an entirely different kind of future for God’s People.
