And that’s important because there is a never-ending competition for our loves out there. The religion of the god Consumption, whose temple is the mall, is a tempting religion. It has a powerful pull on us that extends into our homes; we listen to its preaching every time we turn on the TV. The religion of the god Nationalism always urges us to seek first the Kingdom of America rather than the Kingdom of God. The religion of the god Beauty is a harsh religion, always telling us everywhere we go that we are not good enough and yet keeping us on the hook, chasing after an ideal we can never achieve.
We need to have our loves reoriented, to be trained to love rightly. We don’t come to church simply to learn to think correct thoughts or assert the truth; Christian faith is not about believing right doctrines or holding a right worldview. We are about the right orientation of love, of desire, about teaching and helping people to point and direct their love toward the only thing that is worthy of that love: God and God’s Kingdom.
